Describe your time with The Wedding Present in five words: Triple-tracking vocals at midnight Tell us what tracks you remember performing on I most remember singing on the French version of Why Are You Being So Reasonable Now? If you do backing singing, you pretty much have to impersonate the person you are singing with. I am from London/Oxford but had got quite good at impersonating David's northern accent. But trying to impersonate David's accent doing French was really, really difficult! What aspects, if any, about being associated with the group did you miss the most? I wasn't really associated with the group for that long, but I miss going into posh studio, with producers who really care that the singing is totally in tune and in time. Which band member did you get on best with? David. I didn't really know the others at the time, although I got to know Shaun Charman a little when he was in the Popguns. Do you have a song that you consider to be your defining moment with The Wedding Present? Nobody's Twisting Your Arm. I just liked the song - and the backing vocal! Tell us something that not many people know about David Gedge.. Do people know that he listened to every single Peel show (and had them taped when he was on tour)? They probably do, but I found that strangely impressive (if bizarrely compulsive). When was the last time you went to see The Wedding Present or Cinerama live? I think I saw Cinerama at Peel's Christmas Radio Show in 1999. My then band Marine Research was also performing. Cinerama were great that night. I haven't seen the all-new Wedding Present yet, but hope to. I was invited to their gig at the Forum but I already had tickets to see Chelsea in the Champions League. So football won over indie on that occasion. A sorry state of affairs, I know! |
What is your relationship with David Gedge like now and would you consider working with The Wedding Present again? Our relationship is fine although not especially close. We are always friendly when I see him around. I would be happy to work with him again but I doubt he would need any dodgy indie-girlie backing vocals these days now that he has got a girl in the band anyway. What are you doing now? I have a band called Tender Trap. I am also a professional economist working in competition policy. I am also a mum. Have you got a box of 'TWP Stuff' in the loft? Tell us what's in it? Nope! I have boxes full of Talulah Gosh/Heavenly/Marine Research/Tender Trap/Sportique stuff but no Wedding Present.
Amelia Fletcher Specific Questions: Talulah Gosh..was it really such a long time ago? 'Fraid so. In a years time it will be the 20th anniversary of our first show. Very scary. And even more scarily, I still haven't really changed my wardrobe! Will Tender Trap be back in action at anytime? Our second album will be out this autumn on Fortuna Pop! (UK) and Matinee Recordings (USA). it will probably be called 'Talking Backwards'. Same lin-up as on the first one plus Claudia Gonson on drums. Not sure if we will be playing live though, since there is a second small indie-being on the way. Do you have a hideous painting of yourself in your atttic that becomes more and more grotesque with each passing year whilst you remain lovely? I wish! I bet you haven't seen me since I became a mum! |
